Exterior And Interior Detailing - The Science And Craft Of Automotive Enhancement And Preservation

What Is Auto Detailing?

To better understand what auto detailing is, it is better to explain what it is not. It is not just a thorough car wash. Even for interiors, it goes beyond being a more thorough cleaning of the interior. It is not taking a wax applicator or polisher (buffer to some) to your car briefly. Not just about what you put on your car.

What you see on a Saturday afternoon is not auto detailing. The car wash experience is not the same as a detailing experience. Even a basic car wash for a detailing business is going to be different than that of a car wash business or car wash that does detailing.

Auto detailing is the meticulously safe process of restoring, enhancing, and preserving an automobile.

This may surprise non detailing consumers, but I rarely use the word cleaning to really describe what I do.

Car Wash Vs Detail - Everything In Between That Causes Mutual Frustration

When it comes to deciding between the (reasonably priced) cheaper and the costlier option, many consumers do not really think this through. There are expensive problems with the $100, $200, and (in 2026) the $400 inside and out detail.

When your focus is on limiting microscopic marring or long term degradation, your product choice for just a car wash becomes exponentially more expensive. The time you take to just wash a car goes from 20 minutes to two hours very quickly. A significant portion is thorough and detailed cleaning, but an even more significant portion is also safety. Just like you can not take a Michelin 3 Star chef and asking him or her to change effectively in fast-food restaurant, you cannot turn a professional detailing business into a car wash. Like some fast food menu items you may have a taste for certain items, that chef may not make well, or be more likely to error trying to be efficient. The same can be said for detailing.

Contrary to popular opinion, what some people consider high-end detailing has more value for typical car owners than often believe. The value in lower level services done meticulously are often understated. Knowing what I know as a consumer, the Mirror Reflections Auto Spa standard detail (basic exterior) will often exceed the expectations of both someone looking for something even more basic and someone looking for something more extensive at a cheaper price. Most people never realize the cost of a cheap detail, until they experience true enthusiasts car care. Many people look for certain buzzwords to overcompensate for the disappointment with volume shops. To better understand why, I can break down the basic fundamental exterior auto detailing process below.

Mirror Reflections Auto Spa - Basic To High Level Exterior

Prep is another way of saying auto detailing. A process and even each step is done to a standard. Each step is interdependent of each other.

Inspecting Paint Part Of A Detailing Process

This is often one reason why your 6 month sealant does not last longer than one month. Prep is not just for ceramic coatings. The other being the sealant chosen was a cheaper and perhaps easier to use product for high volume shops.

The Interior Detail

Interior detailing, just like the exterior, is not just about cleaning. I also recognize that many people have a desire for simpler cleaning/rejuvenation wash of their exterior. As a low volume specialty operation although I do not offer maintenance washes in general to the public outside of my ceramic coating clientele, I do make that exception for those that book an interior detail.

The value of Mirror Reflections Auto Spa and Rodney Tatum’s uncompromising approach different.

Yes, by the nature of my business, I have a healthy portfolio of Porsche, Audi, Corvette, and Maserati models. But that does not mean everyday cars or even consumers who are not as discerning as me cannot or should not be my clients.

If I was to take an educated guess, a majority of detailing businesses are lacking either and or also insurance or license to operate. Most are competing with those businesses directly, many they have to sacrifice quality control in 3 main areas.

The first is product quality, whether you are informed or not, or also they lie to themselves. The second is time. It becomes an exercise in how well they can get the job done. The third is labor resources. A poorly trained revolving door. As I show the following ask yourself, would a near or at minimum wage employee, let alone other employees have the knowledge or interest in the following.

Questions to ask yourself! “What are the chances the person working on my car knows about the PH Scale with respect to detailing? Does the person have an understanding of how to approach stains professionally?”

Most of the time, the answer is no.

What I outlined does not totally go into the depth the other concerns, namely bacteria problems and long-term fabric degradation from oversaturated carpets and upholstery, often with extraction (often referred to as shampoo). Re-soiling from not using proper processes to neutralize a surface. Setting stains permanently from using the wrong chemical particularly with heat.

A lot of people will look at the inside of car and hope or expect meticulous cleaning, which in and of itself is much more grueling and challenging then most realize. But when someone questions whether they are disappointed in a service that I would expect to cost more, I do not immediately think about quality. My thought is usually for me to feel comfortable with said expectations, realistically for any business it is usually $200 to $400 more. For an established business like mine, I am naturally going to be even more expensive. But my thought is often a hope the car was damaged. If the exterior is done, there is a hope, unfortunate expectation of the car being scratched at that price point.

If you look at the inside of your car two things come to mind. One all of the unique components. A chemical that is fine or perhaps is meant for one part of your car, the mist could potentially damage the area next to it. But also not all plastic is the same. It is another reason why, I say it is a myth high-end detailing is only for luxury and exotic cars. Some of the more delicate materials our on cheaper cars. That is why trying to get around the reality that detailing is a luxury service is not only a recipe for disappointment, IT IS ALSO VERY DANGEROUS.

Is It Worth It? Why Does The Average Consumer With A Everyday Vehicle Willingly Pay So Much For A Detail - What Is The Value

Not everyone, but most people understand what they are getting when they go to the drive through of fast-food restaurant. They understand it is not a real restaurant in the way we construct fine dining. The average person knows a cheap chain restaurant is not the same as a Michelin 3 Star restaurant. In terms of automotive trades, particularly auto detailing, most people have a derogatory view of the business and trade, that leads to illogical reasoning of the cost of services

The hourly labor of other trades, many of which are more comparable skills as well as the cost of supplies. Most people familiar with detailing, know it does not make sense that they can get a good result with a $200 or even $400 detail.

Who Mirror Reflections Auto Spa Is Legitimately For And Not For

The focus is on car enthusiasts, but not as limited as you may believe.

Detailing is a luxury service, not simply for the sake of be expensive but due to the demands of a legitimate business to provide that experience at a high level. Even for those that care about their car that cannot afford such services, I have created resources to help those.

For those that are tied to monthly services and on a budget, then this is not an ideal fit. There are other more appropriate options. Also not everyone respects auto detailing professionals or can reconcile the pricing of a professional service, especially where expectations do not match budget. We are also not a fit.
